Project
Founded in 1833, Kalamazoo College is among the 100 oldest colleges in the country. The 45-acre campus is located in close proximity to downtown and is landlocked between historic neighborhoods and Western Michigan University.
Kalamazoo College teamed with The Collaborative to update the Master Plan and rezone from residential to Institutional Campus District. To meet the zoning requirement, the College had to update the current Master Plan and have it approved by the City Planning Commission. The Plan was developed over the course of eight months, through a highly focused and transparent exercise. During the planning process, the College held a total of 18 neighborhood meetings.
The 2012 Kalamazoo College Master Plan is intended to provide a development framework for the next ten years. The plan is the result of K, its neighbors and the City collaborating to create a plan that meets K’s facility needs as they grow enrollment to 1500 students, while still protecting the integrity of the adjacent neighborhoods.

- New 30,000sf Fitness Center
- New 14-lane Natatorium
- New Multi-Purpose Gym
- New Welcome Center
- New Upper-class Student Housing
- Campus Beautification and Signage
- Campus Architectural Standards
