Project
The 1913 William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library, centerpiece of The Ohio State University’s historic Oval, underwent a major renovation and expansion that honored its Beaux Arts character while transforming it into a contemporary research and learning hub. The design introduced clarity and daylight to a previously dark, complex interior, with new atriums creating intuitive wayfinding and symbolizing accessibility to knowledge.
The 12-story stacks tower was reskinned in glass, transforming it into both a functional archive and a striking architectural icon visible from surrounding study areas. Inside, the library balances collaborative zones with contemplative study spaces, providing students and faculty with environments that support a range of learning styles. By integrating historic character with forward-looking design, the project ensures the library remains a vibrant and relevant centerpiece of campus life.
