Project

The Collaborative teamed with Wilmington College to design and construct a 34,000 SF renovation and 13,500 SF addition to the existing science building. The facility houses 10 laboratories, 3 research labs, 10 classrooms, 2 conference rooms and 30 offices.

The 2-story addition creates a new entry for the building, and a centralized circulation core, along with new biology and chemistry labs. Renovating the existing 3-story building provides new agriculture, math and physics labs for teaching and research. Shared lounge and quiet study spaces are located throughout the building.

Some goals and issues of the project include: Flexible space and furniture, faculty offices located adjacent to or near labs, ADA compliance throughout, additional equipment storage areas, technology integration and flexibility, natural and artificial lighting and system flexibility, especially regarding expansion.

Key green attributes for the LEED Registered building include reusing the existing structure, water efficient systems, a cool roof, low-VOC adhesives and finishes, use of natural daylighting and educational materials teaching students about the building.
