Campus Master Plan & Mobility Plan

Located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) engaged The Collaborative to develop a comprehensive campus plan that aligns with GRCC’s Strategic Plan to shape a 10-20-year vision for physical facilities. The plan was informed by an in-depth, campus-wide space analysis and space needs assessment designed to optimize existing space and recommend the most effective use for all campus facilities. With a predominantly commuter student body, GRCC sought to enhance the commuter experience and address critical transit and parking challenges.

Core initiatives of the 2020 Campus Master Plan included:

• Creating a flexible, adaptable framework for future campus development
• Strengthening GRCC’s presence & identity within downtown business district
• Reducing the need for on-campus parking by increasing transportation options
• Establishing an architectural style that reflects GRCC’s warm, community-centered culture, with more brick and reduced concrete structures
• Expanding green spaces to enhance the campus environment
• Improving pedestrian flow to ensure safe and efficient navigation across campus

Transparency and accessibility were foundational to the planning process, with GRCC conducting focus group meetings, open campus forums, and surveys to incorporate feedback from students, faculty, staff, and the wider community. This collaborative approach ensured that the Campus Master Plan reflects the unique needs and aspirations of each campus constituent group, reinforcing GRCC’s role as a leading educational institution in West Michigan.
