Project
Set just downstream from the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers, the pavilion anchors a site rich with layers of history—from the former Ohio State Penitentiary to the city’s earliest industries. The design challenge was to honor this legacy while creating a flexible, cost-effective gathering space for the community. Drawing inspiration from 19th-century industrial forms and materials, the pavilion incorporates rough stone foundations, masonry walls, painted metal roofs, and exposed steel framing. These elements echo the character of the neighboring railroad bridges while expressing a distinctly contemporary identity.
As the primary gathering point within the park, the pavilion frames one of the city’s premier views of the modern Columbus skyline. It not only acknowledges the city’s industrial past but also reinforces its growth and vitality, embodying both memory and momentum in the heart of downtown.
