With 30 years of experience in public education, retired Superintendent Matthew Schmidt, Ed.D., possesses an unrivaled passion for student success and community involvement. This is accentuated by a history of guiding districts toward tremendous growth, stronger student outcomes, expanded opportunities, improved school culture and major investments in physical learning environments.

In 2025, his leadership and commitment to the educational community was recognized by the Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators (MASA), as he was named Michigan Superintendent of the Year.

What stands out most about Matt’s leadership is his focus on people. He believes every student deserves to feel supported, connected, and ready to succeed. Throughout his career, he has worked to close achievement gaps, strengthen school culture, expand career and educational opportunities, and build strong relationships with families and communities.

Matt also knows that meaningful change starts with trust. Open communication and collaboration have been central to his approach, helping students, staff, families and community members work together toward shared goals.
